Common name : Hook-lipped rhino
Scientific name : Diceros bicornis
Family : Rhinocerotidae
Native to : Africa
Interesting fact : A group of rhinos is called a ‘crash’.
Conservation status : Critically Endangered (since 2011)
The rhino can get very aggressive; despite its size, it is a fast runner and charges with force. They are known to display this behaviour amongst themselves as well, and die of combat wounds. Gestation can be up to 16 months; mother and calf share a strong bond, and if a threat is perceived, she can kill by charging and goading.
