The Sitta azurea (scientific name) or blue nuthatch is found in the tropical moist lowland and montane forests in the Malay Peninsula and the Java and Sumatra Islands of Indonesia. 5.3 inches in length, the blue nuthatch has very vivid colouration in shades of blue and purple. The head is black, which fades to dark blackish-blue upperparts and changes to purple-azure colouration. The wings are lighter but edged with a bluish-black colour. The throat and chest are almost white and contrast with the dark blue belly. Its diet is comprised of small invertebrates, beetles, moths and caterpillars which it forages for in trees. An average clutch-size has 3-4 eggs. Incubation period has not been recorded. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
