Bone House

Bone-House

Bone House is a custom whereby a building housing human bones is built. Many such houses exist across Europe.

Do you know: The custom of human skeletons being arranged
in a special way inside a building started in 1278.

Bone Houses were created essentially due to the paucity of space for burials. Hence, in the area where there isn’t enough space, the deceased is first buried in a temporary grave, and a few years later, his/her bones are removed and placed within the Bone House. These houses are usually built on sacred or hallowed grounds and as many as 40,000-70,000 human skeletons are arranged in a special/decorative way in the Bone house.
