British Museum

British-Museum

The British Museum is a museum housing 8 million pieces of art, history and culture. The Museum is located in Bloomsbury, London. It was established in 1753, but was opened for the first time to the public in 1759.

Why it is special: While the Museum was initially established and housed pieces from the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and scientist, the Museum expanded considerably over the next two and a half centuries only because of the growth of the British colonial footprint. Many objects housed in the Museum have been a matter of controversy. But undeniably, the Museum is by far the largest and most exhaustively researched one in the world.
