Bumble Bee

Bumble-Bee

Common name : Bumble bee

Scientific name : Bombus spp.

Family : Apidae

Native to : Worldwide distribution

Interesting fact : This insect came to be named so, because of its buzzing and droning about. The term bumble bee was first used in 1530.

16 mm in length, these bees are rather plump and furry. Like all bees, their diet is comprised of nectar from various flowers. They make their honey combs underground in rodents’ holes or above the ground in thick grass. Their combs are not organized like those of regular bees. When the queen bee is ready, she lays her eggs on wax cells created by her. When these eggs hatch, they are fed nectar and pollen to grow. They are taken care of by other female workers.
