C. Subramaniam

Chidambaram Subramaniam (commonly known as CS) known as the Father of the Green Revolution in India, held ministerial positions at the State and the Centre. He was born on January 30, 1910 in village Pollachi in Coimbatore district. He finished his
higher studies from Madras University. In 1932 he qualified for Bar at law.
He was the member of Coimbatore Congress committee from 1952 to 1962. He served as minister of the Tamilnadu Govt. in different portfolios.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962 and was the Minister for Steel and Mines. Subsequently, he handled important portfolios like Agriculture in 1965 when he spearheaded the Green Revolution, and later the portfolios of Finance and Defence. He was a minister in Tamil Nadu before moving to the Centre.
In 1971 he was appointed as vice-chairmen of the Planning Commission. He served in the central cabinet in different capacities. In 1979 he served as India’s defence Minister.
He was appointed the Governor of Maharashtra in 1992 and had to resign due to certain reasons.
Hounoured world wide CS was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1998. He breathed his last on November 7, 2000.
