Common name : The small white
Scientific name : Pieris rapae
Family : Pieridae
Native to : Europe, North Africa, Asia, Great Britain
Interesting fact : The small white butterfly’s caterpillar is a huge pest to most mustard family crops and to cabbage plants, hence the name cabbage white.
The butterfly is a smaller version of the big white. It is white in colour on the upper side with 2 trademark black dots. Eggs are laid on the host plants. Once hatched, the caterpillar hides and inhabits the underside of leaves, keeping it hidden from predators. Their diet is comprised of cabbage, kale, horseradish, radish and broccoli.
