Calendar (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Diary/Notebook
  2. Watch
  3. Pencil & pen
  4. Compass
  5. Piece of paper

Like many ancient cultures, record and calculate correctly future sunsets to develop a calendar, through this experiment.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly, find an unobstructed
view of the sunset, a place where
there are minimum buildings and constructions.
  2. Mark a place where you will continue to observe the sunset.
In your diary on the first day, observe where the sun
sets and draw out the ‘horizon landmarks’.
  3. Also, note down the time, day and date inside the sun.
  4. The ‘horizon landmarks’ will be comprised of whatever
the sun is setting into. For instance, mountains, lake,
    ocean, trees, etc.
  5. Using the compass, note down west, north-west and
south-west on the piece of paper.
  6. Record the sunset in the same manner every
week on the same day preferably for a few
    months at least.
  7. Can you see a pattern emerging and if so,
can you guess where the sun would set the next day?

RESULT

People all over the world have recorded the movements of the sun so as to predict the next sunrise as well as tell them which season is going on and which part of the year they are into. Creating a sun calendar with the recordings of sunsets for a year helped them decide where they should stay, plant different foods, etc.
