The candlefish is blue to brown on the back and the top of the head and silvery-white on the sides. It can grow 15-20 cm in length. Feeding on plankton, fish eggs, insect larvae and small crustaceans, it lives in oceans but returns to rivers and freshwater streams to spawn and die. Their lifespan is 5 years.
