Caño Cristales is a Columbian River located in Meta, Columbia. Known popularly as ‘Liquid Rainbow’ or ‘The River of Five Colours’, Caño Cristales is renowned the world over for its striking colours. Considered the most beautiful river in the world, the riverbed in the summer and autumn months varies from yellow and green to blue, black and even red, making it commonly referred to as the river that ‘ran away from paradise’. The variations in colour occur due to a unique species of plants on the riverbed known as the Macarenia clavigera that turns bright red when it receives adequate sunlight.
