Charles John Andersson was born on 4th March 1827 in Varmland, Sweden, and he died on 9th July 1867 (aged 40 years) in Angola. Charles was a adventurer, trader, explorer and collector of natural history specimens and hunter noted for the exploration of southern Africa in the present day Namibia which was largely unexplored at that time, Charles explored Lake Ngami and Okavango River. He wrote the account of his travels in books which he could never get published due to the lack of funds. He had repeated financial problems. Even though his main interests were exploration and natural history, he often needed to earn money through trade and hunting.
