Chess of a Thousand Colours

Daniel was a very artistic boy. He looked at everything in a different way. Whenever he saw something, he turned it into a painting. He could paint anything, filling it with beautiful colours. One day, Daniel went to spend a weekend with his grandfather at the palace of the Marquis of Castling. The Marquis was a very close friend of Daniel’s grandfather. Marquis had a very big and beautiful house and he was also a very famous chess player.
When Daniel was looking at everything around in the house, he entered a big room where he saw a chess set. It was totally hand-carved with its own marble table. ‘These pieces are uniform and the black and white colours of the board are looking very pale,’ he thought.

While Daniel was looking at the chess board, the Marquis called him for dinner. Daniel kept thinking about the chess board even while having dinner. At night, Daniel took out a paint box from his bag and walked into the room where he saw the chess set. He started painting each piece with a different colour. After colouring all the chess pieces, he painted a very beautiful scenery on the marble chessboard. He was sure that his grandfather and the Marquis would like it. The next morning, the Marquis saw his chess set painted with different colours. He was very angry because he had an important match to play in the evening. Now, it was impossible to play chess without knowing the worth of each piece. And above all, the squares on the board were covered with a painting.
The Marquis asked everyone and finally Daniel confessed that he had painted the chess set. Daniel felt hurt because many times his paintings had annoyed people. After some time, he went to his grandfather and told him that he could rectify what he had done with the chess set. Then, the grandfather asked the Marquis to give Daniel a chance. The Marquis gave Daniel a chance. Daniel went off and spent hours to rectify the chess set. Just before the match was about to begin, Daniel showed them his work of art. They were amazed to see the beautiful chess set. There were two teams – one of day and the other of night.

On one side, Daniel made the sun, clouds and rainbows and on the other side, stars and the moon. Daniel understood that a little order had made things right. The Marquis smiled and said, “Daniel, you will definitely be a great artist.”
