Chinkara

Common name : Jebeer gazelle, Indian gazelle

Scientific name : Gazella bennettii

Family : Bovidae

Native to : India, Pakistan and Iran

Interesting fact : They can stay without water for months, surviving only on dew drops and plant fluids

Conservation status : Endangered

The Indian gazelle is closely related to the blue bull or nilgai; it is the smallest Asiatic antelope, weighing a mere 25 kg and rising to a height of 65 cm, approximately 25 inches. Loss of forests and encroachment by humans through urbanization and political strife has had a detrimental effect on the chinkara’s population.
