Cloud In A Bottle (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 1-litre clear plastic bottle
  2. Warm water
  3. Matchstick
  4. Tongs
  5. Thin strip of cardboard

Have you ever wondered how clouds are formed? And more importantly, have you ever wanted to see them up close?

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take warm to hot water and pour very little into the plastic bottle, enough to cover the base of the bottle.
  2. Light a matchstick and holding it with tongs insert the burning end just inside of the nozzle of the bottle.
  3. Ask an adult to take a thin strip of cardboard, light it with a matchstick and insert it near the nozzle of the bottle.
  4. Let it fill up with smoke.
  5. Once it is done, drop the strip of cardboard and cap the bottle.
  6. Squeeze the bottle a few times tightly.

RESULT

Once you have released the bottle, you’ll see a cloud form inside it. By squeezing the bottle a few times after creating smoke, we compress the gas, raising its temperature. As we release the bottle, the air expands and the temperature cools down, creating clouds!
