Codling Moth

Codling-Moth

Common name : Codling moth

Scientific name : Cydia pomonella

Family : Tortricidae

Native to : Europe

Interesting fact : The caterpillar of the codling moth is infamous as a pest to apple and pear trees. 0.5 inches in length, the codling moth is a nocturnal creature. They hibernate as pupae throughout winters, and emerge as moths in spring. The female deposits one egg on each apple/pear or its leaf. As soon as the larvae hatch from the eggs, they burrow their way into the fruits. They go all way through the fruits until they reach the cores, where they feed on the seeds.
