Colour Changing Water (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 3 clear glasses
  2. Two 500 gm vitamin C
    tablets
  3. Iodine (2%) (available at
    your local chemist)
  4. Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
    (also available at the
    chemist)
  5. Liquid starch
  6. Measuring glass and
    spoon
  7. Warm water

Magic and science are the two sides of the same coin. You can create magic with the help of science and teach science as if it were magic! This experiment does exactly that.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Create Liquid A by crushing the 2 tablets of vitamin C to a fine powder and dissolving it nicely into 60 ml of warm water in a glass.
  2. Take 1 teaspoonful of Liquid A into a new glass, and add 60 ml of warm water and 1 teaspoonful of iodine to it. Call it Liquid B.
  3. You’ll notice the dark-coloured iodine becomes transparent.
  4. In the last glass, mix 1 tablespoonful of hydrogen peroxide and ½ teaspoonful of liquid starch into 60 ml of warm water. Call it Liquid C.
  5. After all that hard work, here’s the fun part. Pour all of Liquid B into Liquid C and pour it back and forth a few times, and observe.

RESULT

In a few seconds or minutes, the solution turns blue! How? Because of the starch which tries hard to turn the iodine blue. But it has to battle with vitamin C which tries hard not to allow this. Eventually, vitamin C loses
and the reaction turns blue.
