The Phodilus prigoginei (scientific name) or congo bay owl is found only in high altitude grasslands and tropical forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is 9-11 inches in height and has a beautiful chestnut brown plumage on the upperparts, and a rusty lighter brownish-orange plumage on the underside. Its face is compact and oval, and it has dark eyes. Very little is known about this bird’s diet and breeding. But it is assumed, that like other bay owls, this bird’s diet also is comprised of insects, lizards, frogs and small mammals. An average clutch is believed to have 2-4 eggs, but the incubation period is not known. Thought to be extinct until recently, its IUCN listing is ENDANGERED.
