After Sanjaya had left, the Pandavas and Krishna settled down to discuss the message he had brought. Yudhishthira had finally realized that Dhritarashtra said something nice, but his meaning was always hidden behind the words. Sanjaya, his messenger, had said that Dhritarashtra wanted peace, but he wanted it by the Pandavas giving up their kingdom to his sons. There was no truth in Dhritarashtra’s words or his messages. War seemed certain. So, Yudhishthira turned to Krishna to advise and guide them now in all matters of right conduct and statesmanship. Krishna agreed with them about war being certain. As a last measure, he would go as their ambassador to Hastinapura. Everyone should know, he said, that the Pandavas had made every effort to avoid war. Yudhishthira was worried about Krishna’s safety, but Krishna said that the Kauravas had no courage to attack him, for fear he would turn them to ashes.
