  8. Cold water

Learn all about convection currents while conducting this simple experiment with friends.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Ask an adult to help you pour very hot water into a small glass. Add a few drops of red food colour to the water.
  2. Seal the glass with a plastic wrap and rubber band to hold the plastic wrap in place.
  3. Next, take the large jar and pour cold water into it.
  4. Ask the adult to help you place the small glass of water filled with very hot water (red coloured) into the jar filled with the cold water.
  5. When you are ready, take a knife, and gently make a cut in the plastic wrap covering the small glass. What happens?

RESULT

The red coloured water would have escaped from the glass and risen straight up. This is because the red coloured water was extremely hot and hence much less dense than the cold water surrounding it thereby creating ‘convection current’.
