CT scan is a computed tomography scan. It is a medical procedure by which x-rays processed by the computer are used to obtain the tomographic images of the various parts of the body. G.N. Hounsfield was the inventor of CT scan, a diagnostic X-ray system. The invention of CT scan is considered to be the most revolutionary in the field of radiology after the discovery of x-rays. In 1979, G.N. Hounsfield was given the Nobel prize in Medicine for his path-breaking innovation. During the seventies, this was one of the most advanced technologies of contemporary medicine. CT scans have been evolving over the years. Spiral CT scan is used in today’s medical world. The first spiral CT scanner was a Siemens patented SOMATOM Plus system.
CT scan provides a good volume of data that can be manipulated according to the need. CT scan is also used in other fields such as non-destructive material testing.
