The Dambulla Cave Temples were built in Sri Lanka, between the 1st century BC and 1250 AD. The Dambulla cave complex comprises 5 caves that were built under a huge overhanging rock and carved with drip lines, so as to keep the interiors dry. The caves are filled with statues, inscriptions and paintings of the Buddha’s life. While the caves were converted into temples around the 1st century, gradually the caves became major religious centres.
Amazing Fact: One of the caves in the complex contains more than 1,500 paintings of the Buddha that cover the entire ceiling!
