Dancing Raisins (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

1. Raisins
2. Colourless soft drink or
   soda
3. Transparent glass
4. Vinegar

Pour your favourite colourless fizzy drink into a glass and drop a few raisins into it. Watch them bounce about.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Take a transparent glass and pour soda into it.
2. You could also pour vinegar into the glass and add a bit of baking soda. It will have the same effect.
3. Drop a few raisins into the fizzy soda and watch them go.

RESULT

Initially, the raisins will sink to the bottom, but the minute they reach there, they will rise up to the surface again. This is because of the carbon dioxide in the drink. Since the raisins are denser than water, they sink. But then the carbon dioxide bubbles in the soda latch onto the rough surface area of the raisins and float them to the top, where they are released. The raisins sink again, repeating the entire process.
