The Death Ritual of the Yanomami tribe of
the Amazon involves endocannibalism as a
way to keep the person alive.
Do you know: The Yanomami tribe does not consider death to be a ‘natural process’. Instead, they believe that a rival tribe sent an evil spirit
to kill the tribe member.
The Yanomami tribe has a ritual whereby the body of a recently deceased tribesman is laid in the forest covered with leaves, approximately for a month; after which the body is cremated and the ashes are mixed into a soup made of fermented bananas. All the kinsmen of the community must consume this soup in order to keep the deceased’s spirit alive.
