Deception Island is a caldera of an active volcano, with one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. It is part of the South Shetland Islands Archipelago in Antarctica. The first recorded and authenticated sighting of Deception Island was in 1820.
Why it is special: While it remains largely uninhabited, Deception Island has grown in popularity as a tourist stop for the sightings of many colonies of chinstrap penguins and the concept of making a warm bath by digging into the sands at the beach. The Island has varying microclimates, with water temperatures going as high as 70°C and air heating up to 40°C closer to volcanic areas.
