Delphinium is a long-stemmed perennial that typically grows to 4-6 feet tall. Some varieties are annuals, too. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces 3-inch double flowers densely packed into terminal spikes. The flowers are in short racemes, pink, purple or blue. The seeds are poisonous and have an acrid and bitter taste. They are dangerous, and cause vomiting and purging if eaten. Earlier, the juice of the flowers and an infusion of the whole plant were also prescribed against colic.
