A dictionary is a book that lists almost all known words with their meanings, pronun-ciations, usage information and other information in an alphabetical order. It can be any language depending upon the country. There is no specific person associated with the invention of a dictionary. However, the oldest known dictionary was invented in Syria, roughly around 2300 BC. Samuel Jackson is often known to be the inventor of the same. But that is not right as one of the earliest existing dictionaries is in Latin.
The Chinese invented the oldest monolingual dictionary in the 3rd century BC. The oldest printed dictionary is in Hindi and Persian language and was written by Amir Khusro in 1320. It is important to be noted that the word ‘dictionary’ was invented by an Englishman known as John of Garland in 1220. A dictionary can also be called as a vocabulary.
