Diego de Almagro was born in 1475 in Almagro, Spain, and he died on 8th July 1538 (aged 63 years) in Cusco, Peru. Diego was the first European to discover Chile when he participated in the Spanish conquest of Peru. He led the expedition that conquered the Inca empire along with Francisco Pizarro but there was much instability in the new colony because of friction between the two captains. Later, Diego de Almagro was chosen by the King of Spain to assist in the conquest of Chile where he suffered many hardships.

Do you know: A dear friend of Francisco Pizarro they later turned into the most bitter rivals. After defeating Diego’s army for imprisoning his brothers Francisco put him to death.
