Dig Deep (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Shovels
  2. Large glass jar with a lid
  3. Different types of soil
    (sand, topsoil, gravel,
    clay soil, etc.)
  4. Water
  5. Pen and notebook

The next time you feel the urge to explore the great outdoors, take a few plastic cans and shovels and better understand the vast variety of soil that exists.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Understand with the help of an adult, that there exist many different types of soil.
  2. Collect the different types of soil from as many different locations as you can. It could be nature trails, gardens, nursery, beach, etc.
  3. Gently start filling the different samples one after the other into a glass jar, until the jar is halfway full with soil.
  4. Observe the different layers and note
    them down in your notebook.
  5. Next, add water to the jar until it is
full. Shut the lid tightly onto the jar.
  6. Shake up the glass jar.

RESULT

Once the glass jar has been shaken up, all the different types of soil will mix with one another and you will not be able to identify the different layers. However, place the glass jar down and wait for some time. After two hours, have a look at the soil again. Most of the layers would once again be visible. This is because of the varying density levels of the different types of soil. As a result, the ‘heavier’ types of soil will sink while the ‘lighter’ ones will stay on top.
