Diogo Cao

Diogo-Cao

Diogo Cao was born about 1450 in Vila Real, Portugal and he died about 1486. A navigator, Diogo was an important explorer in the Age of Discovery. He was the one who discovered the mouth and estuary of the Congo River when he was sent by the Portuguese King to explore the African Coast. He explored on further down to Angola and marked a second pillar. He took a second voyage to Africa. When King John II of Portugal restarted the work of Henry the Navigator, he sent out Cao to open up the African coast still further beyond the equator.

Do you know: Diogo Cao is said to have died near Cape Cross by one report and by another he is said to have returned to Portugal.
