Discipline is the real ruler of the whole universe. The earth, the sun, the moon and other planets, all are governed by certain laws to maintain perfect harmony and beauty in nature. Any deviation from set rules will result in gross disaster in nature. Similarly, society too has to be regulated by a certain code of conduct. Discipline is indeed extremely important for a civilized existence. A disciplined citizen will not only fight for his rights but also allow others to exercise their rights. In a disciplined society, every individual should exercise self- control for the welfare and happiness of all. Aristotle has well-said, “Discipline is obedience to rules formed by the society for the good of all.”
The strength of a nation lies in discipline. The citizens of a disciplined nation, work in a spirit of cooperation and unity. Discipline helps to make progress, fight external invasions and maintain national unity. No nation can progress unless its citizens are disciplined and governed by certain set norms. However, discipline doesn’t mean the negation of personal liberty. It means a self-imposed restraint and maintenance of ethical values which holds much relevance in each sphere of life.
The importance of discipline in educational institutions is well recognized. Unfortunately, we observed that discipline in our schools and colleges has considerably declined. Students show disrespect to their teachers; they misbehave in the classrooms, organize strikes, attempt to take the law into their hands.
