Joel Houghton invented the first dishwasher in the year 1850, which was also when it got patented. It was a very simple and easy-to-use hand-turned splashing equipment which was fixed to a wooden tub. In 1865, an enhancement of this device was patented by L.A Alexander who added gears to the spinning rack that held dishes and this allowed them to spin inside the water tub.
Both of these inventions were made of wood and they did not really bring out clean dishes. It was not before the 1920s that any major additions were made to the existing machines. It was later on when plumbing got introduced to hook up constant water supply that the dishwasher designs improvised. Since it was expensive and very large, not many households could afford to have them. However, in the year 1937, the dishwashers produced were small enough for household use. The household version of this appliance was a creation by William Howard Livens, which was much similar to the dishwashers that we use today.
