Don’t Break That Egg (Funky Physics Experiments)

You will need:

  1. A large plastic bottle
  2. Scissors
  3. A few eggs (in case your
    practice egg breaks!)
  4. Cello tape
  5. Water
  6. Salt

We all have at some point or the other tried
this experiment. And we all have also at some
point or the other failed this experiment. But
follow the steps below and you will find a
fullproof way of not breaking that egg.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take a plastic bottle and ask an adult to
cut it around the widest part.
  2. Place the egg inside the bottle and tape the bottle back. Make sure to tape it well so that the bottle may not break upon impact.
  3. Next, half fill the bottle with water.
  4. The egg inside should sink. Start adding salt to the water and shake the bottle gently so as to let the salt dissolve in the water.
  5. Keep adding salt until the egg starts to float and stays afloat.
  6. Holding the bottle at a height
    above your shoulder-length or
even above your head, drop it
    to the ground.

RESULT

The egg should not break. If the egg had been placed directly in the bottle
without water or even if it were placed in water but without salt, it would have
broken. However, by adding salt, the egg stays afloat in the water inside the
bottle. When this is dropped, the egg surrounded by water is saved because of the
upthrust of the water which acts as the cushion, when the bottle hits the ground.
