Douglas Mawson was born on 5th May 1882 in Shipley, US, and he died on 14th October 1958 (aged 76 years) in Brighton, Australia. A geologist and academic, Douglas led an expedition to the Antarctic sector south of Australia which was mostly unexplored with the aim to carry out scientific studies. They mapped the coastline and took geological samples. On their return they defined the exact location of the South Pole. Later, he also led a joint research expedition which resulted in the formation of the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Do you know: During the expedition Douglas barely made it back to the camp. Two of his three teammates fell into a crevasse along with most of their supplies and sled-dogs. And the other teammate died due to a disease which came about because he had to eat dog-meat to survive.
