Dung Beetle

Dung-Beetle

Common name : Dung beetle

Scientific name : Scarabidae

Family : Scarabaeoidea

Native to : Worldwide distribution

Interesting fact : The dung beetle is the only known animal which apparently navigates using the Milky Way as a guide.

Not more than 3 cm in length, the dung beetles are classified into rollers, tunnelers and dwellers. True to these names, the different varieties of dung beetles, which only eat dung or faeces as their diet, either roll the dung into a ball for later, or bury it wherever they find it or live in it. These little bugs play a very important role in the agricultural process. Known to carry dung 250 times its weight, the dung beetle uses the brood ball to lay eggs, which hatch and feed on the dung from the brood ball.
