Duryodhana’s Hospitality

Having received the message of Krishna, Yudhishthira felt worried. He sent the message to his friends and relatives and requested them for their help.
King Shalya, the uncle of Nakula and Sahadeva, Madri’s brother, was on his way with his huge army to meet the Pandavas. Duryodhana heard of it and decided to take care of him and his army lavishly when they camped. King Shalya thought that all the hospitality was arranged by the Pandavas, so he was very happy and accepted it without checking.
When he thanked the attendants, they gave the message to Duryodhana. Immediately, Duryodhana reached there and asked him to fight the war on his side. King Shalya knew he had been tricked, but he had to agree.
He explained the whole incident to the Pandavas. Both he and the Pandavas were sad. Yudhishthira told his other friends and relatives that they should be alert.
On the other hand, Duryodhana’s joy knew no bounds having got the large army of King Shalya at his disposal.
King Shalya was saddened at being trapped by Duryodhana. To let Yudhishthira know that the end of Duryodhana was imminent, he told him a story.
Once Indra insulted Brihaspati, the preceptor of gods, so Brihaspati left devalok. Indra was asked to take Vishwarupa, son of the great Yogi Twasta, as his preceptor.

But in a fit of anger Indra killed Vishwarupa. The angry sage Twasta sent a demon named Vrita to kill Indra. All the gods were frightened. Indra was so ashamed that he hid himself. The gods needed a king. So, they made Nahusha king of devalok. Nahusha became arrogant and wanted Shachi, Indra’s wife, to serve him. Indra met Shachi and advised her thus, “Tell Nahusha that you will serve him if he visits her palace in the palanquin of the Seven Great Sages (Saptarishis).” Nahusha tried to do it and beat the Seven Great Sages mercilessly. The angry sage Agastya cursed him to become a serpent. Thus Indra again ascended to his throne.
