Earth’s Magnetic Field

The Earth’s magnetic field is also known as ‘the geomagnetic field’. Since past, our ancestors have used magnetic compasses to find their way around the Earth. Magnetic compasses have a needle made up of magnet that lines up with the Earth’s magnetic field, which is aligned north-south wherever you are on the Earth. This geomagnetic field is created by the strong electric currents within the core. The Earth’s magnetic field was studied by a German mathematician and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauss in 1830. He deduced that the Earth’s magnetic field is the result of the principal dipolar components which are present inside the Earth’s surface.

The outer core of the Earth is liquid. The magnetic field is the result of the movement of this core. The Earth’s magnetic field is like a big magnet.
