Education is the backbone of democracy; but it must be remembered that by the term ‘Education’ we should not mean the so-called academic education, which is cheap, artificial and mechanical. The term ‘Education’ stands for liberal education. We require that education, which should teach us the art of citizenship; unless we are educated thoroughly in the light of enlightened citizenship, we cannot call ourselves democratic in the real sense of the term. It is a matter of sheer pity that most of our university graduates have, by no means, the qualities of citizenship. Unfortunately, a large portion of our education is still completely detached from the problems of the modern world. Experience teaches us that a man, with good general education, based on languages or science, may be and indeed often, is an excellent father, an excellent businessman, and at the same time a bad citizen.
