Common name : Roman shield
Scientific name : Scutus antipodes
Family : Fissurellidae
Native to : Australia
Interesting fact : Elephant snails have a well-developed sense of light and can tell light and shade apart.
Conservation status : Not Evaluated
The elephant snail looks like someone stepped on it. Its jet-black body has an oval-shaped, dirty-white shell, concealed under the skin folds of its mantle which it exposes when threatened. They live under rocks and boulders at low tide level. They come out in the night to avoid drying of the mantle and to feed on algae in pools, crevices or under stones.
