Emerald Starling

The Coccycolius iris (scientific name) or emerald starling is one of the smallest species of starlings. It is found in the lowlands of West Africa. Its height is not more than 7.5 inches. Apart from a small glossy purple patch under its wings and as markings near the eye, this bird is glossy emerald green all over in plumage. Its diet includes berries, fruits especially figs, ants and other insects. A clutch of 2-4 eggs is laid and incubated for 13-15 days. It is interesting to note that the female has a bare patch of skin on its belly, which helps keep the eggs warm by transferring body heat to the eggs. Its IUCN listing is THREATENED.
