The Dromaius novaehollandiae (scientific name) or emu is endemic to Australia. With a height of 6.6 feet, these birds have soft brown feathers overall. They have strong legs used to run great distances, since they are flightless. It uses its strongly clawed feet as a defence mechanism. Mostly herbivores, the emu eats a variety of plants, and also insects, ants, moth larvae, and sometimes even charcoal. The reason for this has not yet been ascertained. During breeding season, it is the females who generally fight one another to woo the males, while it is the male who constructs the nest. An average clutch has 10 eggs which are incubated by the male for 55 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
