Now, the demon-king Ravana came into the battlefield to fight against Rama.
His gold Lanka had been reduced to ashes. His near and dear ones had been sent to the Death-god. Laments of orphans and widows could be heard in the entire Lanka. Soldiers on both sides clashed fiercely. Wherever Ravana went, there would be an uproar. Sugreeva killed Mahodara and Virupaksha. Kumbha and Nikumbha, sons of Kumbhakarna, fell fighting in the battlefield. When all his warriors had fallen, Ravana faced Rama who came forward with Vibheeshana by his side. The dejected Ravana was in his chariot while Rama stood barefoot on the ground.
When the gods in the heavens saw this, Indra sent his chariot driven by Matali for Rama. Rama and Ravana were engaged in a furious combat for the final victory. The directions shuddered with the clanking of weapons. Both were equal in might and valour. Vibheeshana told Rama that Ravana’s weak spot lay in his navel. Rama shot the Brahmastra at Ravana, and for the first time in his life, the name ‘Rama’ escaped his lips as he died.
