Exploding Fountains (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Mentos candies
  2. Any carbonated drink
  3. Stiff paper
  4. Sheet of paper

Like the baking soda and vinegar volcano, this erupting fountain is loads of fun. But beware; it can be extremely messy, with jets of soda erupting several feet high. Compete with your friends and see whose fountain is the tallest.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly, this experiment is messy, so conduct it outside.
  2. You can use any candy available to you which has a rough surface. It does not have to be mentos candies.
  3. Any carbonated drink with fizz in it will do.
  4. Roll a paper to resemble a pipe. Seal one end and stack your candies inside the paper and place your thumb or a stiff paper to cover the opening.
  5. Everything in this experiment happens quickly. So, be prepared.
  6. Open the cap of your carbonated drink and drop all the mentos candies into the bottle together.

RESULT

The soda erupts in a huge fountain-like geyser shooting several feet high into the air, because the surface of Mentos candies has millions of tiny pores which allows carbon dioxide to form when mixed with soda. It rises rapidly to the surface.
