This experiment shows you what propagation is all about. In this experiment, you will see that a new plant develops from the parts of an old plant.
Things Required:
4 potatoes
Potting soil
Quart jar (liter jar)
Directions:
Place the potatoes inside a dark cabinet. Check the skin of each potato daily for small white growths called “eyes”. Ask an adult to cut a square out of the potato around the eye. Fill the jar with potting soil. Bury the “eye” about 2 inches (5 cm) below the surface of the soil with the eye sticking up. Keep the soil moist, but not wet.
Observe the jar for two weeks.
This Is What Happens:
In 10 to 14 days, a potato stem will emerge from the soil.
Science Behind It:
A potato is an underground stem called a tuber. The potato eyes are the organs of vegetative repro-duction. Each eye will grow into a new potato plant. Potatoes are able to propagate which means that a new plant can develop from the parts of an old plant.
