Falling Asleep of the Virgin is a tradition with festivities carried out for a period of ten days in Markopoulo, Greece.

The festivities that occur for ten days revolve around the village church of Panagia of Langouvarda, where in month of August, people who come to the church can see black snakes with crosses on their heads moving towards the church and the icon of the Virgin Mary, from the bell tower. It is said that these snakes are nuns who were transformed into snakes to save them from pirates.
