William, the sheepdog, was keeping a watch. There was a dance at Farmer Oakley’s barn. Everyone had come in fancy dress. It made William feel very uncomfortable. ‘I can’t recognize anyone,’ thought William, ‘What if a stranger gets in? A thief? No one will know!’ So, he was on guard when he saw a shadow move away from the barn towards the house. He followed quietly and watched the person open the door of the kitchen; he slipped in behind him. William sniffed, but this did not smell like his master. ‘I wonder who it is,’ he thought, ‘Why is he going upstairs?’ The man was going along the corridor towards the master’s bedroom and bath. William waited till he reached the door, and then he began barking loudly. The man jumped in fright! Feet came running and lights went on. He saw it was Police Constable Roland! He was going to wash his hands!
