Among the warriors who died that day was Srutayudha. He had been given a special mace by the lord of the waters, Varuna. It would return to Srutayudha after attack, but it was never to be used against an unarmed person who was not a combatant. In a battle with Arjuna, Srutayudha flung the mace at Krishna. It came right back and killed him. This fourteenth day’s battle was savage. Arjuna was attacking Jayadratha while Drona, Duryodhana, his brothers, and Karna were all trying to prevent him from reaching. Yudhishthira had to be protected, which was done in turn by Bhima, Dhrishtadyumna, Satyaki and others. The battle between Bhima and Karna was terrible with Karna losing eight chariots. Every Kaurava brother who went to Karna’s help was killed by Bhima. Sanjaya, narrating the battle, told the grieving Dhritarashtra that he was himself responsible for the damages of the war.
