Find the Centre of Mass (Super Science Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Broom (with a long handle)
  2. Hands

Try this simple experiment to find the centre of gravity of any object.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Start by resting the handle of the broom on your hands. Place the index finger of both your hands at the extreme ends of the broom as shown in the diagram.
  2. Gradually move the index fingers towards each other.
  3. One hand will be able to move easily in comparison to the other finger which is sitting closer to the centre of the mass of the broom.
  4. Keep moving your fingers inwards until you find the centre of the mass of the broom, by balancing it easily on both fingers as close as possible to each other.

RESULT

The broom will push downwards due to gravity, while the index finger sitting close to the centre will push upwards due to a larger frictional force being applied to it by the broom. Both the fingers should keep gliding towards each other (one more easily than the other) until they are almost touching and you have found the centre of the gravity of your broom.
