Fire-tufted Barbet

The Psilopogon pyrolophus (scientific name) or fire-tufted barbet is found only in the tropical moist lowland and montane forests of Indonesia and Malaysia. 11.8 inches in length, the fire-tufted barbet has beautifully coloured plumage. The body is mostly green, but the head is purplish-black colour, with white-purple cheeks. The beak is white with a purple bar. It also has a stout bill with tufts or bristles of feathers which protrude above the upper mandible. The underparts are more yellow than green, and there is a blackish-purple ring around the upper chest. Its diet is comprised of fruits and insects. However, its favourite food is figs. An average clutch has 2-4 eggs which are incubated for 13-15 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
