Fishing (Funky Physics Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Large see-through glass
    jar
  2. Water
  3. Kebab stick
  4. Jelly sweets (or any
    sweets which are soft
    enough to be punctured)

Try this fun experiment at home as a game
with your friends, and learn about refraction
of light which creates an optical illusion.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fill the glass jar with water and place a long kebab stick into the jar.
  2. Look into the jar from the side. The kebab stick will not look straight, specifically at the water level.
  3. Remove the kebab stick and place jelly sweets into the jar.
  4. Ask your friends to spear the sweets by only looking at the stick and sweets from the side of the jar.
  5. They will soon learn that it is not so easy as it sounds..

RESULT

Due to the refraction of light, the kebab stick appears disjointed, breaking at the water level. Due to the refraction of light which takes place because of the water, fishing for the jelly sweets with the kebab stick that appears disjointed, is very difficult.
