Five little peas grew in a pod and they thought the whole world was green. One day, a little boy plucked the ripe pod and broke it open. He was carrying a pea-shooter. So, he took the peas one by one and put them in his pea-shooter and blew them out.
The peas shot out. The first one rolled into a gutter. Two peas fell on the ground and were eaten by pigeons. The fourth one fell into a muddy patch. It felt it was safe, but soon it swelled up and burst. The fifth one hit a wall and was caught in a moss-filled gap near an attic. He took root and began to grow there.
A poor woman lived with a small daughter in the attic. She worked very hard to look after her daughter who was very ill. The little girl could not leave her bed and walk, so the woman had to do everything in order to earn some money for a living.
One spring morning, the excited girl saw a little green plant peeping in at the window.
Her mother told her that a pea had taken root and was growing there. She put her daughter’s bed close to the window. She could watch the plant when her mother was away at work. Every day, she saw the plant grow a little bigger.
Watching the plant growing strong in the sunshine gave hope to the little girl. Its tendrils grew higher as it looked into the room. The little girl shared her happiness with her mother too. As the plant grew, the little girl too gained her strength.
One day, a pink flower bloomed on the pea plant. The girl could stand at the window and kiss the flower. Her mother returned from work and was delighted to see her daughter on her feet near the window. She realised that now her daughter would get better. They both thanked God for the pretty pink pea blossom. The pea blossom was happier than all the other peas in the pod.
